In April of 2004, under a steady rain and covered in mud, Prairie Crossing Vineyard and Winery officially started. Andy and Julianna were attracted to the vibrant history of grape growing in Iowa, so they set out to establish Prairie Crossing together. They started out with just a single test row of vines, which initially failed miserably due to harsh weather and trying to figure out which grapes grew best in what soil. However, their persistence led to a passion of creating world-class wine from grapes grown in the Loess Hills of Iowa. With construction of the winery complete, fermenting wines on a commercial level began with the 2006 harvest. Then, a new vision came to life with the addition of the event center in 2015.
